Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device

It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story film was released, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Toys

In the teaser reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
